Position Overview
Our client has a strong focus on controls initiatives for the next few years.  As part of that controls environment, every line of business is standing up a Data Management group.  Data Management is the process and procedures that are put in place to confirm that the data is complete, correct, and accurate.  In layman’s terms, it is the process that we are implementing to be sure that the data that we use for reporting, the data that we use to make decisions, is accurate, consistent and can be relied upon.

There are several roles involved in the Data management process, one of which is the Data Steward.  The Data Steward ‘owns’ certain data elements.  They are responsible for understanding those elements, defining them, creating descriptions to ensure that everyone understands what they are and documenting the expected valid values.  Data Stewards work with business partners to understand the processes that use these data elements and then with the technology teams to understand the lineage of the elements from the source to the reporting source and actual reports.   The Data Steward is also involved in the data quality process to test the valid values for each element against the actual production data.  Where the valid values are not as expected, the DS works with the Data Quality team to determine the root cause of the

problem and possibly recommending a fix.

Responsibilities of the Data Steward:

  • Understand business process and related data elements used in those processes.

  • Maintain Metadata – Establish and maintain quality metadata for the data elements they steward (e.g. business definitions, business data integrity requirements, valid values metadata)

  • Ensure Data Quality – Define a Critical Data Element’s data quality business rules, valid values.  Participate in short term and strategic remediation efforts for any data quality issues identified as a result of the DQ rules.

  • Understand Usage – Understand how a data element is used across the Line of Business end to end process/data flows

  • Own data element certification to the systems or record, quality metadata exists, data lineage is understood, and data quality rules are enforced.

  • Communicate status to management and stakeholders as necessary through summary reports, review decks, project plans, agendas, minutes, issue / risk tracking, etc.

  • Track milestones and deliverables
